After studying at Holy Child Institute in Kolkata, he earned a mechanical engineering degree from the Government Technical Institute in Gorakhpur and started his first business there.

Starting Sahara in 1978 with just Rs 2000, Roy, who used to ride a scooter around Gorakhpur, took over Sahara Finance’s chit fund in 1976. He revamped its financial structure, reportedly inspired by the older Peerless Group’s system.
