Indian cricket player KL Rahul shared his feelings about spending time on the field against the Netherlands before the big semi-final against New Zealand on November 15 in the ongoing ICC Men’s World Cup 2023.
Rahul found his form, scoring the fastest century for India in a World Cup, achieving it in just 62 balls. This included four sixes and 11 fours, helping India accumulate 122 runs in the last 10 overs, resulting in their second-highest World Cup total of 410 runs.
“I didn’t get much time on the field in the last two games, so today was refreshing. Batting at No. 5, building confidence is crucial. It was a good inning, and gaining the confidence to hit sixes towards the end was vital,” Rahul expressed to NDTV.
Rahul’s well-timed performance ensured India remained unbeaten in the tournament, securing a 160-run victory over the Netherlands.
“It’s not complicated. You have to go all out in the last 10 overs. The plan was to score as many runs as possible. As the ball gets softer, hitting sixes in the final overs becomes challenging. It’s not just this game; everyone has a clear game plan, and we’ve been executing our plans well,” he added.
Reliable Behind the Wickets: KL Rahul has been outstanding behind the stumps in the World Cup, significantly impacting the game with his decisions on the Decision Review System (DRS).
His quick decision-making in a match against Sri Lanka led to India getting the crucial wicket of Dushmantha Chameera for a duck.
“Wicketkeeping can be tricky, but I enjoy being part of the game. Bowlers have challenged me during DRS calls, but they don’t always give me enough credit for it,” he mentioned.
Rahul Sets New Record in ICC Cricket World Cup 2023
KL Rahul made history in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 by breaking a record previously held by his captain, Rohit Sharma.
During India’s 160-run victory over the Netherlands at Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday, the 31-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman scored 102 runs off 62 balls. This achievement made him the fastest Indian century scorer, surpassing Sharma’s record century by one ball.
Sharma had set the previous record in a World Cup 2023 match against Afghanistan at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium on October 11.
In the world of cricket, Virender Sehwag holds the title for India’s third-fastest century in a 50-over World Cup, achieved in 2007 against Bermuda in 81 balls.
Rahul’s remarkable performance included four sixes and 11 fours, contributing to India’s total of 401 runs in 50 overs and a 160-run victory.
This match saw Rahul break several other records. He became the second Indian wicketkeeper-batsman to score a century in a 50-over World Cup, following his current head coach, Rahul Dravid. Dravid achieved this feat in the 1999 World Cup against Sri Lanka with a knock of 145 runs.
In his seventh One-Day International (ODI) century for India, Rahul, alongside Shreyas Iyer, set the highest fourth-wicket partnership in a Men’s Cricket World Cup with 208 runs.
Iyer also contributed significantly, scoring a century against the Dutch side and finishing unbeaten with 128 off 94 balls, including five sixes and 10 fours.
The Bengaluru match marked the final group game of the 2023 World Cup between India and the Netherlands.
Not to be overshadowed, Indian skipper Sharma made his mark in the record books during the match. The 36-year-old secured the record for the most sixes hit by a batsman in a calendar year in ODIs, reaching 60 sixes in 2023. This surpassed the previous record of 58 held by South African legend AB de Villiers in 2015.
With 24 sixes in nine games during the ongoing tournament, Sharma also claimed the record for the most sixes by a captain in a single edition of the Cricket World Cup. As India advances to the semi-final, Sharma has the opportunity to extend his lead in these records in at least one more match.
