Tata Safari Storme Overview

Safari is the name which has been the backbone for Tata Motors for about two decades. It is one of the oldest SUVs coming from the Tata’s stable and help the carmaker earned fame in the Indian market. The new Safari Storme takes the legacy further with more muscularity, more comfort and more practicality. It’s been half a decade since the company first introduced the model in the country.

Since then it’s been doing quite well in the market. Tata Safari Storme is a step ahead of its predecessor in every aspect with brilliant engineering. The company from time and now provided the vehicle with lot of updates and tweaks. The new Tata Safari Storme gets multiple changes on the inside and out along with the engine updates for better power output.

Tata Safari Storme Exteriors

When it was launched in 2012, Tata Safari Storme was clearly a next generation product in its own right with an all-new hydroformed chassis, improved engine and new interiors but the designers settled for a philosophy that was too close to its predecessor (which is being sold alongside). In their defense, Tata Motors officials stated that the core character of the design was kept intact to retain the loyalty old car commanded from off road enthusiasts.

This strategy may have given the new gen SUV a reasonably stable monthly sales figure but it never really helped the bottom line. In short, we think not being distinctive enough is Safari Stome’s Achilles heel The grille and secondary air dam get different meshing and that’s pretty much it.

Unfortunately, with the facelift, the company has missed another great opportunity to impart a fresh appeal into the off roader. Unless both pre-facelift and newer versions are parked side by side, one would be hard pressed to point out the visual differences..So what has changed? The front grill and secondary air dam receive new black honey comb meshing instead of chrome finished vertically-oriented rectangular elements and the ‘STORME’ typeface on the chrome grille headliner is now black in color. The roof rails are no more color coordinated and that’s where exterior visual changes end.

Tata Safari Storme Interiors

A somewhat similar story is the case with the new Safari Storme’s interior too. There are a few elements that are familiar, though the dashboard is all-new. The quality of the interiors is, however, much improved. With better quality faux leather on the seats and better finished plastic panels adorning the entire cabin, and the beige and light brown colour theme, the interior certainly feels more plush than before. But, small air-con vents, compact knobs and controls and a barren dashboard mean that the interior is quite bereft of the ruggedness that the exterior exudes.Book Tata Safari Storme Test Drive in Bangalore.

The interior is however, quite cheery with a lot of light pouring in thanks to the large glass area. I found the driver’s seat rather too firm and while shifting to find a more comfortable position, I could hear the springs creak and complain. Seats for the rear passengers are comfier and are almost like the captain seats of the front, but better padded. However, since they are set high and since the window glass cuts low, there is very little room for privacy for rear passengers. Two jump seats can form part of the third row of seats, as part of optional fitment. There is enough headroom though, thanks to the two-step roof.

Tata Safari Storme Transmission

This is where the difference lies. To bump up the power and torque figures of the 2179cc engine, Tata engineers had to strengthen the cylinder block, head, pistons, main bearings and fine-tune the injectors and the turbocharger. As a result, the 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine now produces 153.8bhp and 400Nm of torque. Although power has gone up just 6bhp, the torque figure has increased by a massive 80Nm. Tata has mated this motor to a new 6-speed manual gearbox.

The improvements are apparent as soon as you start the car. The idle is quite smooth and vibrations are reduced too. You still experience turbo lag below 1800rpm but it doesn’t feel dead and even the turbo kicks in a pretty linear fashion. Tata has also employed shorter ratios on the new 6-speed gearbox which has reduced the number of gearshifts and has made the Storme less cumbersome at slow speeds. The additional power and a tall sixth gear also means that the Storme feels relaxed on the highway and at 100kph the engine is doing a meagre 2000rpm. The new 6-speed gearbox though a marked improvement over the older unit still feels a bit unpolished and transfers a fair amount of engine vibrations to your palm.

Our VBOX timing gear confirmed the improvements and the Varicor 400 turned out to be faster than we expected. The 0-100kmph sprint took a scant 12.9 seconds which makes it more than a second faster than the old car. In-gear times are even better thanks to the shorter gearing with 20-80kmph in third taking 10.27 seconds (3.1sec faster) and 40-100kmph in fourth coming up in 12.26 seconds (2.2 seconds quicker). To know more information on Tata Safari Storme visit Basna

Tata Safari Storme Riding

In this regard, the facelifted Tata Safari Storme has improved quit a bit. A lot of it an be credited to the new steering wheel. It is now nice hold and has been positioned a lot better too thanks to which you don’t really have to be Mr. Fantastic to negotiate a u-turn. And then the tall seating, that ensures absolute visibility on all four corners, further aids ease of driving. Clutch effort is easy too which makes it that much easier to drive in traffic. There is no change in the suspension setup and we don’t really mind that as the outgoing model too had a great ride quality. The car glides over potholes and broken roads with ease, but the kickback from on the steering wheel can still be felt. And then the high ground clearance comes of good use when negotiating such surfaces too.

Handling was never the Safari Storme’s strongest points and that is mainly considering its height and high centre of gravity. Show it a series of bends and the weight of the car is evident. Moreover, there is ample of body roll due to which you don’t feel amply confident. However, grip levels from the 16-inch 235/70 section tyres is good. As far as braking is concerned, the four disc brakes work well enough especially for a car this big and heavy. It might not be the sharpest, but it is reliable nonetheless.
