Mahindra Verito Overview

Known for producing utility vehicles, Mahindra tapped into the sedan segment with Verito, earlier named Logan. The sedan has witnessed several changes over the years in a bid to improve in terms of looks to sustain cut-throat competition in the segment. Rugged looks, spacious cabin and a reliable diesel engine make Verito a dependable sedan.Priced affordably between Rs 7.27 lakh to Rs 8.21 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the muscular sedan was previously sold under the Logan nameplate. Mahindra Verito Exterior

The original Logan was designed to be a cheap, economical and practical sedan, and the Verito keeps the same characteristics of its predecessor.The design is simple and robust and this is not a car that you’ll fall in love with but for the buyers in this class the design is the most important. The Verito however has other qualities and it’s a good choice for daily commuting.

The Verito has generous dimensions and to differentiate it from the Logan Mahindra has changed the radiator grille which now carries the Mahindra Logo. Also new are the ski racks and side cladding which is a first for a sedan in the Indian market. At the rear the Verito gets a chrome rear appliqué and the rear spoiler. The rest of the car is identical to the Logan and the Verito is available Fiery black, Toreador red, Mist silver, Diamond white, Rocky beige, and Java brown.

Mahindra Verito Interior

Mahindra Verito’s interior dimensions are generous and you get a practical and roomy cabin. The Verito is 4247 mm long, 1740 mm wide and has a height of 1540 mm. Interior space is it’s strength and the rear seats have plenty of leg and head room and can accommodate comfortably 3 adult passengers. The road visibility is very good and the broad mirrors allow you to see in every direction.Like the exteriors the interior styling too can be best described as modest. Just like the Logan the Verito too features a lot of storage places and you also get a lot of cheap plastics. The use of cheap plastic however does manage to keep the price of the car low.You don’t get an exorbitant feature list with the Verito but it has everything it needs to be practical. For the rear seats you get triple headrests, gradual dim cabin lights, air conditioner, power steering, power windows, driver information system and a rear defogger. At 510 litres the Verito’s boot is good for a big family. On the Verito you also get ABS with EBD and Driver Airbag.

Mahindra Verito Performance

The Mahindra Verito is powered by a 3-phase 72V induction motor that promises 30.5kW of power and 91Nm torque. A single-speed transmission transfers all this power to the front wheels. The 200Ah Li-ion battery in the car powers all the ancillary functions, including the music system, AC and headlamps. It also charges the 12V battery which is used for the start up. Starting the car is also an art in itself. You turn the key, but it doesn’t go all the way like in your conventional fuelled car. 15 seconds after turning the key, you hear a slight noise –– a subtle ding from the rear of the car, signalling that the car is ready now. After this audible cue, you have to press the drive button located on the lower right side of the dashboard. At this point, the car starts to creep forward. For further progress, select F on the gear lever and you start to move ahead at a reasonable pace. For an additional boost, shift to the B mode which is the phase that I preferred to be in for the entire duration of my drive. In this mode, you get a slight boost. That being said, even in B mode, the driving experience is quite sedate and I wouldn’t really call it an electrifying.

The Mahindra Verito takes a fair bit of time to climb to 40kmph from naught, not ideal for quick getaways…or if you plan on robbing a bank. Mahesh Babu, the CTO of Mahindra Electric, claims that the 0-40kmph as well as 0-60kmph sprints are much faster than what one can achieve in the e2o. The maximum speed I managed to see was 56kmph and it took some time getting there. Achieving Mahindra’s claimed top speed of 86kmph will take both a long time and a long stretch of road.

Mahindra Verito Driving

The entering of the Verito is quite easy. The sitting position can be adjusted to and fro and also height can be adjusted with the lever provided manually. Once we started the engine, smooth steering welcomes the driver to have a pleasurable ride.The Verito’s pedals are easy to handle. We went to have a drive in the busy Hosur road of Bangalore where performance matters most, as there is a mixture of heavy traffic and signals, as well as free roads and few humps.With the super smooth steering and fast pick up, the Verito’s handling is good. The indicator switch is provided on the left side rather than the conventional right side, which indicates the same design used in France by Renault rather than being redesigned as per Indian norms. The taking of turns, acceleration and braking are classy and give a sense of confidence with respect to performanceThere is ample of leg space at both front and rear seats. The cushioning of rear seat is good enough to ensure comfort for the rear seat passenger with good lumbar support, texture of seats and head restraints.

Mahindra Verito Safety

The safety quotient has been given great attention in designing this model. In the top end variant, the driver is provided with an airbag. This trim has an collapsible steering column, which adds to the safety by collapsing down in case of a head-on collision and making it easy for the airbag to deploy. The front and rear head restraints are adjustable as per the passenger preference. The front seat belts can be adjustable as per the convenience. The engine immobiliser is an advanced technology that freezes the engine when it suspects an unauthorized access. Child proof rear door locks that are built into this car is a family friendly factor which additionally is backed with electrical rear window child lock. The day and night rear view mirror is fitted as a standard feature. The front and rear windshield is laminated. Furthermore, it has got halogen headlamps to it as well. While, the Executive Edition has been bestowed with blue vision headlamps.

Mahindra Verito Bottomline

The Mahindra Verito is a sub 4-metre Verito in the true sense. It is identical to the Verito in every aspect except the rear end design and boot capacity. While the hinged boot isn’t much practical, it has helped Mahindra in saving costs of development and production. So does the Verito Vibe make sense? When you factor in the Verito Vibe costs a good Rs. 80,000/- less than the regular Verito, things start making to the mind. If you can live with the rather unconventional rear and boot, the Verito Vibe makes a good case for those who want a practical hatchback which can carry five in reasonable comfort while delivering exceptional fuel efficiency at this price point.
