Toyota Etios Cross Facelift Overview & Test Drive

Toyota Etios Cross

Toyota Etios Cross Overview

Toyota India has extended its arsenal of products by introducing the all Etios Cross in the Indian auto industry. Basically, nothing more, but a more rugged and sturdy version of company’s existing hatchback Liva; Etios Cross seems to be crossover. The Japanese automajor has incorporated several SUV elements in this crossover to make it rough, striking and swashbuckling. Being offered with petrol and diesel guises, the crossover in-houses three different engines – a 1.2L petrol, a 1.5L petrol and a 1.4L diesel.Check for SBI car loan at Fincarz.

Toyota Etios Cross has been launched with 4 variants – G, V, GD, and VD, where G and V fall in petrol guise while GD and VD represent diesel fuel trims. Although, this segment is pretty new for the Indians and there are not many vehicles available currently but it has got enormous potential. Not only outside but also inside the cabin, the crossover gets some of the flabbergasting comfort and convenience features. Toyota has kept an eye on the fuel economy, especially, as it plays a pivotal role in deciding the fate of a vehicle in India. In all, the crossover is a valiant effort by the auto major and it has something for everyone.

Toyota Etios Cross Exteriors

The exterior of the vehicle has been fitted with a tough and unique looking robust bumpers with a new silver colored integrated fog lamps, the front also has Trapezoidal protection which makes the appearance of the vehicle tough, although the rest of the styling including the headlamp unit remains the same however the side turn indicators now finds its place on the front bumpers and on top of the fog lamp.

Take a look at the side profile of the SUV and you will find lot of black colored plastic moldings to give protection to the side of the vehicle and this plastic molding wraps the car lower portion which helps it giving the rough and tough appearance. The Etios Cross also has a new diamond-finish 15-inch alloy wheels and roof rails along with a spoiler which helps further in building the rugged image of the SUV. The rear of the Etios Cross too has the same styling and the new addition includes Etios Cross badge and a skid plate with silver finish.

Take a look at the new Etios Cross and you will definitely like the uniqueness as well as the tough image of the vehicle..

Toyota Etios Cross Interiors

Step inside the Etios Cross and you find yourself in a familiar cabin. The layout of the dashboard hasn’t changed which is dissapointing as the centrally mounted instrument cluster is still not easy to read on the move. That said, the cabin looks much improved thanks to the use of piano black inserts on the doors, instrument cluster and centre console. Quality inside seems improved as well but is still not up to Toyota’s legendary standards. Our test car which had done only 130 kms showed signs of rattling over bad roads, which can be attributed to the light weight of the vehicle.

The other change to the interiors is the Etios Cross badging on the seats. There is ample amount of room inside the cabin, with rear seat passengers having enough space to stretch out in utmost comfort. Even the seats offer good support making the Etios a comfortable car to be in. The boot is reasonably big at 251-litres and it’s when you close the boot lid do you realise the Etios is a very light car. Toyota is offering the Etios Cross in 4 variants – G, V, GD and VD. All variants get a 2-DIN audio system with MP3, FM and USB functions but the top-spec trim also gets steering mounted audio controls and Bluetooth connectivity. The Etios Cross comes loaded with quite a few features even on the base trim but the lack of internally adjustable ORVMs is a shocking omission. Check for Etios Cross  in Origo2000

Toyota Etios Cross Engine

The Etios Cross comes in three engine trims, namely the 1.2L and 1.5L petrol and the 1.4L diesel. We managed to do a very short spin on the 1.5L petrol and 1.4L diesel.Even though it was a short drive, the 1.5L Petrol engine left a positive impact. It is the same which comes on the TRD Sportivo hatch. The four cylinder 1496 cc petrol engine produces 90PS of power at 5600 rpm and 132 Nm of torque at 3000 rpm. All the engines come with a standard 5 speed manual transmission.

The engine feels very peppy and it sounds impressive at higher engine speeds. It produces good power even at lower engine speeds which is great in stop go traffic. During our test run on Mumbai streets, the engine just kept revving and had enough punch for a broad speed range. Since it is just a namesake crossover with plastic claddings, the suspension settings have not been changed. It comes with ventilated disc brakes in front and drum brakes at rear. We couldn’t push it to its limits but were satisfied with its dynamics if not happy with it.

After the peppy 1.5L petrol, it was time to drive the 1.4L diesel. To begin with, the engine has a very typical diesel rattle. The shifts aren’t as smooth as the petrol unit and for obvious reasons. The four cylinder 1364cc diesel engine produces a power of 68PS at 3800rpm and a torque of 170Nm at 1800-2400rpm. View offers on Toyota Cars in Mumbai at Autozhop.

Instead of being a demanding driver, we decided to give the diesel a fare chance. The diesel unlike the bigger displacing petrol unit is not an agile unit. It has to be at a sufficient 2000 rpm to start generating power. This one has a linear but strong power delivery. In traffic situations, the engine would feel suffocating slow but on open stretches it feels more comfortable. Also this one claims to deliver 23.59 kmpl while the 1.5L petrol claims 16.78Kmpl.

Toyota Etios Cross Driving

Toyota’s motives are clear here. A car that can take you from point A to point B. There can’t be anything more clear than the 900 km range for the diesel. The steering is super light and the suspension super soft. But on the flip side the soft suspension and the 170 mm ground clearance make the car top heavy on corners and give a bit of body roll. Though it makes it very easy to ride in daily traffic and highway drives too are good but you can’t push the car around too hard.

The diesel engine is a bit noisy if pushed too hard. If we compare the petrol to the diesel, the petrol is better for quick city stints. And the diesel is an effortless mile muncher, at the same time the diesel has taller gears thanks to the enormous torque hence leading to lesser gear shifts. The option of 1.2 and 1.5 petrol gives you a choice between efficiency and performance. The ease of driving is only proven by the no of cars used by a lot of women drivers

Toyota Etios Cross Safety

Toyota India has incorporated a highly efficient and effective braking system in the Etios Cross in which front brakes are ventilated disc brakes while the rear brakes being drum brakes. This braking system works exceptionally well in accordance with the Anti-lock braking system (ABS) and Electronic Brake-force Distribution. The trio, Braking System, ABS, and EBD, together ensure smooth braking and stopping while brakes are being applied suddenly. In order to endure collisions, the top-end variants are blessed with dual front SRS airbags for the driver and the co-passenger.

In terms of security, the compact crossover consists of first-grade features like Immobilizer and Keyless entry. Additionally, the information cluster keep providing several security alerts and warnings regarding driver seat belt, door ajar, parking brake, headlamp on etc. to ensure safe driving. In all, the Etios Cross, despite being a budget-friendly car, features top-notch safety and security features.

Toyota Etios Cross Final Thought

None of the hatchovers perform much better than their hatchback siblings – but they exist for a reason. Not that Toyota can’t make a proper compact SUV, but there are customers who want rugged vehicles without wanting to spend extra for them or even exploit their capabilities beyond loading over maximum capacity. The demand is for a tough looking car that would give the driver a bit of an edge over rickshaws, two-wheelers and other hatchbacks in the city traffic.

The Etios Cross will address this set of buyers with a premium of around Rs 40,000 to Rs 60,000 over the Liva. At that price point, the Etios Cross will make sense – it does look like a brute, has better performance figures than the Cross Polo and will also be more affordable albeit few missing features.

Maruti Suzuki Celerio Performance & Price

Maruti Suzuki Celerio Overview

The new hatch has been christened as Celerio and is built and developed on a completely new platform and posses the looks and features to attract even the choosiest person. Maruti Celerio will replace the A-Star and the Estilo which are already present in the Indian market for quite some time now. We have already informed you about the different variants that are offered with this new hatch and also the list of equipments that will be available with them.

Maruti Suzuki Celerio

The Celerio is powered by a new 3 cylinder engine codenamed which has a displacement of 998 cc and will generate an impressive amount of power and torque about which we will talk about a bit later in this review. It also features a new type of transmission which is also something new and has been installed in a budget car for the very first time here in India.

Maruti Suzuki Celerio Exteriors

After the Swift, we’d say that the Celerio is the car that brings a fresh new face to Maruti Suzuki. Large curved headlamps, a twin-slat bonnet grille in chrome and an over-sized airdam below give the Celerio aggressive front looks. At the sides, the two parallel lines – tornado and the body side lines are prominent and lightly curved. The shoulder line has been set a bit high, but does not compromise the amount of light pouring into the cabin. The interior of the Celerio is quite airy, unlike the dark rear seat of the A-Star.

The rear of the Celerio features a simpler design, with a fairly straight-forward hatch door and the tail-lamps looking vaguely like they have been carried forward from the new Alto 800, though with a different combination. Overall, the design of the Celerio’s body panels seems to have been done with a dual-purpose in mind – to achieve a low co-efficient of drag for better aerodynamics and to ensure lower manufacturing costs. Open the door and they are fairly thin, in terms of width, including the plastic panels inside. But, they close with an assuring ‘thunk’.

Maruti Suzuki Celerio Interiors

Maruti Celerio CNG interiors are same as the other versions. It looks quite contemporary and is good value for the money spent. The Celerio has a dual-tone dashboard with beige and black colours. The finish is also good which makes it look premium. The CNG comes only in VXi, so it doesn’t get a factory-fitted music system, no ABS or airbags. here would be an addition of ABS, once the new regulations set in, but as of now you get neither. The features on the Maruti Celerio CNG are all four power windows, power steering, AC and integrated dual fuel gauges.

The Maruti Celerio CNG gets dual tone seats, which also look stylish. The space offered in the front row is good enough for tall people and the seats have decent support too. The best part is that the rear also has great leg room and knee room. Even tall passengers would find it comfortable to sit in. It is certainly good and comfortable too, but the limited thigh support could have been optimised. The CNG tank takes up all the space, hence there is hardly any luggage space in the boot. So, the only option will be to use a carrier for luggage. Check for Maruti Celerio in origo2000

Maruti Suzuki Celerio Performance

Yes going by the facts, the Celerio diesel can be a bit of a dampener. Two cylinders, 793cc, 47.6PS of power at a fairly low 3,500rpm and 125Nm of torque at 2,000rpm. But don’t write it off yet. The Celerio is a light car, about 60kg lighter than its competition, and when it goes down to such small capacity engines, every kilo matters. The engine itself is an all-aluminium block with a turbo’s diameter the size of a few fingers. Performance isn’t anywhere close to brisk, but adequate to keep pace with traffic, and a downshift will help you in that overtake.

A weak bottom end is expected with just 125Nm of peak torque available at a fairly high 2,000 rpm but the way around it is keeping the engine in its midrange. The engine isn’t as vibey and noise inside the cabin is well-curtailed to give you a pleasant drive most of the time. Towards the top of the rev band though above 3,000rpm, as the tiny two-pot begins to shriek is when you will find the Celerio a bit unpleasant. The shift quality is good though, clean and quick slots with a clutch that’s a bit heavy but not jumpy. Check for Car Loan Interest calculator.

All things said, the Celerio diesel is a car for the office commute for two. Any more passengers or luggage loaded and the engine will feel strained and out of breath to lug the extra weight

Maruti Suzuki Celerio Driving

The biggest plus point about the Maruti Celerio is indeed how easy it is to drive. Piloting the car in congested traffic is effortless, more so if you are driving the model equipped with the automatic gear shift. Ride quality is very good, more so at low speeds as the suspension is on the softer side with the tyres running a high profile. Ride quality can get a bit messy at the rear as speeds build up, more so on really bad roads where the complete vehicle rattles a bit. Steering has no feel, while it’s light at low speeds, it simply doesn’t weigh up at high speeds. The EPS unit has little feedback to offer.

Small cars can be quite fun to throw around corners but the low grip tyres don’t help the Celerio’s cause. Yes the Celerio handles quite well and is very stable at speed but it somehow isn’t as agile as the Honda Brio, a car with which it will rub shoulders in India. Lack of ABS on the Auto Gear Shift model isn’t understandable at all, nor is ABS only being offered as part of an option on the ZXi trim digestible. This comes from a manufacturer who offers ABS as an option on mid-level variants of the Ritz and Swift while making it standard on all diesel trims of the Ertiga. Braking performance is decent but the pedal could offer better feel. View offers on Maruti Cars in Bangalore at Autozhop.

Maruti Suzuki Celerio Safety

The hatch comes clubbed with the EZ Drive in it, which makes driving the vehicle easy. The EZ technology in the car assures a ride that is hassle free, especially while riding in heavy traffic conditions. The braking system comprises of front and rear drum brakes, which enables immediate braking action. Maruti Celerio is much more safer than the existing A-Star, as the car is bigger in size.

The tall boy design gives high driving position, which helps in better upright view of the road. The electronic power steering helps in easy manoeuvering of the vehicle with shorter turning radius. High strength steel side impact beams ensure protection at the doors in case of any side impact. The top-of-the=-line variant boosts dual airbags – one for the driver and the other for the co-passenger.

Maruti Suzuki Celerio Cost in Hyderabad

Maruti Suzuki Celerio On-Road Price in Hyderabad ranges from 5,10,420 to 6,48,060 for variants Celerio LXI and Celerio ZXI AMT Optional respectively. Maruti Suzuki Celerio is available in 9 variants and 6 colours. Below are details of Maruti Suzuki Celerio variants price in Hyderabad. Check for Celerio price in Hyderabad at Tryaldrive.

Maruti Suzuki Celerio Final Thought

These days, the imbalance in preference for diesel versus petrol is levelling out, and diesel engines have never worked at the entry-level end of the market because engineering driveability, refinement and economy to a cost has been too much of a challenge. Yet, here comes Maruti developing an all-new, small-capacity diesel engine from scratch for this segment. The company is convinced there are enough ‘die-hard diesel fans’ in India to justify the investment, so was it worth the risk?

The Celerio ZDi’s price comes within a hair’s breadth of the starting price of a Swift diesel, which will make buyers think twice. The bigger concern is that, as with the AMT gearbox in the petrol car, this engine will almost certainly move into more affordable models like the Alto and Wagon R, at which point, interest in the unexciting Celerio could fade once again.

But the reason you’ll want this car is its incredible fuel economy, and the low maintenance Maruti is known for. On that front, the car truly shines, but know that you have to deal with poor refinement and just about acceptable performance. It also lacks the flair of its rivals, but that said, it’s spacious, practical, comfortable and has decent driveability as well. We’re sure the Celerio diesel will be well received; let’s just hope it can hold buyers’ interest.
