Toyota Etios Liva Exterior

With an aerodynamic body structure and modified features, its exteriors look quite attractive. Its side profile is defined by visible character lines. The door handles and outside rear view mirrors (integrated with side turn blinker) are painted in body color. Its flared up wheel arches are fitted with a set of 14-inch steel wheels, which have full wheel covers and are covered with 175/70 R14 sized tubeless tyres . The front fascia is designed with a well designed radiator grille with grey finish and it is embedded with a prominent chrome plated company’s insignia. This grille is flanked by a radiant headlight cluster that is integrated with high intensity halogen lamps and side turn indicator. Its body colored bumper has a wide air intake section for cooling the engine. The windscreen is made of green tinted glass and is integrated with a pair of intermittent wipers. The rear end is elegantly designed with stylish tail light cluster, body colored bumper with a pair of reflectors and an expressive boot lid, which is embossed with variant badging. The windshield is integrated with a high mounted stop lamp that adds to the safety aspect. This hatchback is designed with an overall length of 3775mm, a total width of 1695mm and a decent height of 1510mm. It has a large wheelbase of 2465mm and a minimum ground clearance of 170mm.

Toyota Etios Liva Interior

With the exteriors done and dusted, let’s check what the Etios Liva has to offer once you step inside the cabin. In all honestly, there is not much. You continue to get the same simplistic and basic cabin layout, which is a bit of a turn-off as there was indeed quite a lot of scope for improvement.

First its the steering wheel, which ergonomically feels a bit to large to handle; however it does get mounted controls for the 2-din music system. Talking about the music system, this piece in itself feels outdated, especially if you were to compare it with the ones available on the competition. The dial for operating the air-con control module are very basic while the ones for door locks, exterior mirror adjustment and headlamp leveling feel a bit awkwardly placed.

With the update, Toyota has now revamped the centrally mounted instrument cluster and now it gets a digital tachometer, in addition to the back-lit speedometer, which now looks significantly better than the earlier one. Ergonomically, the Etios Liva’s cabin offers decent storage space, comfortable seats with good shoulder and under thigh support. To sum it up, the interiors of the Etios Liva are a love it or hate it affair, they have been designed not to look good but to work well, which they will for sure.

Toyota Etios Liva Performance

There was a lot of talk of the Liva getting the big 1.5-litre engine from the sedan, but anyone who knows the Indian market would know that the hatch would be looking to exploit the maximum benefits of the excise duty concessions that the Indian government has on offer for small cars. That means that under the Etios Liva hood is a 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine (Read :Engine & Transmission). On paper, it isn’t all that bad, 80PS @ 5600rpm and 104Nm @ 3100rpm. In fact the figures are pretty close to most of the competition and better than some as well. Coupled with the Liva’s approximately 900 kg kerb weight, it should also make for a great power-to-weight ratio to score high on performance. But somehow, that’s not the case because the Etios LIVA’s brief seems to be rather straight forward – better efficiency. With the gear ratios matched to make life in the city easier, the car does feel peppy enough at low revs and accelerates cleanly off the line, but the excitement tapers off much too soon and you really need to work the engine to get past 120km/h.

Our instrumented tests did see the car cross the 150km/h mark but it took a lot of patience and even more stretches of empty roads to get there. The 5-speed manual gearbox may be the culprit here with gear ratios more conducive for city driving rather than highway cruising. But that does have a rather positive effect on its fuel efficiency. The ARAI certified stat reads 18.3kmpl cumulative but real world conditions should see you get about 14.3kmpl in the city and 16.1kmpl on the highway. Considering the prices of petrol today, that’s a welcome proposition indeed! All through the test, the Liva’s gearbox provided positive feel and slick shifts all the way to fifth. Predictably, the Liva didn’t scorch the acceleration runs, taking over 17 seconds to cross the 100km/h mark.

Toyota Etios Liva Driving

What impresses most is the steering. We realized a turning circle radius of 4.8M, which means taking the car out from narrow spaces will never be a problem. Changing gears is very smooth and one can easily change gears while driving. The car’s ride is very smooth and comfortable. The Toyota Etios Liva’s AC is good and powerful and one could feel the effectiveness of the same quickly after turning it on. One more point here is that the glove box is also provided with blower inputs and hence cooling takes place in glove box, making it a good storage for things like chocolates, cool drink bottles etc. Also cup holders have been provided in each door and near the dash which adds to comfort as expected from a premium hatch.

Major humps in the road are overcome with comfort thanks to the high quality suspension. There was no discomfort after the front wheels crossed hump, and there was enough ground clearance to clear the humps without scraping the ground. The car’s pick up is good and we could reach 60 to 80KMPH easily and smoothly in city traffic. While we pushed the car, we were able to touch 150 on the highways. The positioning of Instrument cluster in the middle though innovative, makes it difficult to gauge the speed of the car.Parking of the Etios Liva was easy and we could confidently park the car with minimum space for turning the car.

Toyota Etios Liva Safety

Toyota has taken care of the safety of the passengers inside and a s a result they actually have loaded the LIva hatchback with ABS and EBD which comes as standard across all its grades. Furthermore the hatch also gets duel front SRS airbags as well. There is also an optional rear parking sensors as well with the car.

Toyota Etios Liva Verdict

Let us get this straight, making affordable cars in India is a tough task and so far Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai have been successful. The Etios Liva is a good hatchback to buy and for the price you can expect a little better quality. However, the interior styling could have been better. The biggest USP of this hatchback is the Toyota badge and bullet proof reliability of this Japanese manufacturer. The top-of-the-line variant of the Liva diesel costs about Rs 8 lakhs, there are cars with more features available at this price, but most of them lack the refinement and experience of that Toyota promises. You can’t expect the same high Lindt standards for that price, which the Swiss company has set with its other range of chocolates. However, the company will deliver better product than a Cadbury and so is Toyota. They have made a lot of changes in the Etios family, we expect them to sort out the remaining ones too.

Mahindr Verito Hatchback Review & Test Drive

Mahindra Verito Overview

Known for producing utility vehicles, Mahindra tapped into the sedan segment with Verito, earlier named Logan. The sedan has witnessed several changes over the years in a bid to improve in terms of looks to sustain cut-throat competition in the segment. Rugged looks, spacious cabin and a reliable diesel engine make Verito a dependable sedan.Priced affordably between Rs 7.27 lakh to Rs 8.21 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the muscular sedan was previously sold under the Logan nameplate. Verito was initially available in petrol and diesel fuel options, but currently it plonks a 1.5 litre, four cylinder engine good for 64bhp and 160Nm. Mahindra Verito Exterior

The original Logan was designed to be a cheap, economical and practical sedan, and the Verito keeps the same characteristics of its predecessor. The design is simple and robust and this is not a car that you’ll fall in love with but for the buyers in this class the design is the most important. The Verito however has other qualities and it’s a good choice for daily commuting.

The Verito has generous dimensions and to differentiate it from the Logan Mahindra has changed the radiator grille which now carries the Mahindra Logo. Also new are the ski racks and side cladding which is a first for a sedan in the Indian market. At the rear the Verito gets a chrome rear appliqué and the rear spoiler. The rest of the car is identical to the Logan and the Verito is available Fiery black, Toreador red, Mist silver, Diamond white, Rocky beige, and Java brown.

Mahindra Verito Interior

Mahindra Verito’s interior dimensions are generous and you get a practical and roomy cabin. The Verito is 4247 mm long, 1740 mm wide and has a height of 1540 mm. Interior space is it’s strength and the rear seats have plenty of leg and head room and can accommodate comfortably 3 adult passengers. The road visibility is very good and the broad mirrors allow you to see in every direction.Like the exteriors the interior styling too can be best described as modest. Just like the Logan the Verito too features a lot of storage places and you also get a lot of cheap plastics. The use of cheap plastic however does manage to keep the price of the car low.You don’t get an exorbitant feature list with the Verito but it has everything it needs to be practical. For the rear seats you get triple headrests, gradual dim cabin lights, air conditioner, power steering, power windows, driver information system and a rear defogger. At 510 litres the Verito’s boot is good for a big family. On the Verito you also get ABS with EBD and Driver Airbag.

Mahindra Verito Performance

The Mahindra Verito is powered by a 3-phase 72V induction motor that promises 30.5kW of power and 91Nm torque. A single-speed transmission transfers all this power to the front wheels. The 200Ah Li-ion battery in the car powers all the ancillary functions, including the music system, AC and headlamps. It also charges the 12V battery which is used for the start up. Starting the car is also an art in itself. You turn the key, but it doesn’t go all the way like in your conventional fuelled car. 15 seconds after turning the key, you hear a slight noise –– a subtle ding from the rear of the car, signalling that the car is ready now. After this audible cue, you have to press the drive button located on the lower right side of the dashboard. At this point, the car starts to creep forward. For further progress, select F on the gear lever and you start to move ahead at a reasonable pace. For an additional boost, shift to the B mode which is the phase that I preferred to be in for the entire duration of my drive. In this mode, you get a slight boost. That being said, even in B mode, the driving experience is quite sedate and I wouldn’t really call it an electrifying.

The Mahindra Verito takes a fair bit of time to climb to 40kmph from naught, not ideal for quick getaways…or if you plan on robbing a bank. Mahesh Babu, the CTO of Mahindra Electric, claims that the 0-40kmph as well as 0-60kmph sprints are much faster than what one can achieve in the e2o. The maximum speed I managed to see was 56kmph and it took some time getting there. Achieving Mahindra’s claimed top speed of 86kmph will take both a long time and a long stretch of road.

Mahindra Verito Driving

The entering of the Verito is quite easy. The sitting position can be adjusted to and fro and also height can be adjusted with the lever provided manually. Once we started the engine, smooth steering welcomes the driver to have a pleasurable ride. The Verito’s pedals are easy to handle. We went to have a drive in the busy Hosur road of Bangalore where performance matters most, as there is a mixture of heavy traffic and signals, as well as free roads and few humps. With the super smooth steering and fast pick up, the Verito’s handling is good. The indicator switch is provided on the left side rather than the conventional right side, which indicates the same design used in France by Renault rather than being redesigned as per Indian norms. The taking of turns, acceleration and braking are classy and give a sense of confidence with respect to performanceThere is ample of leg space at both front and rear seats. The cushioning of rear seat is good enough to ensure comfort for the rear seat passenger with good lumbar support, texture of seats and head restraints.

Mahindra Verito Safety

The safety quotient has been given great attention in designing this model. In the top end variant, the driver is provided with an airbag. This trim has an collapsible steering column, which adds to the safety by collapsing down in case of a head-on collision and making it easy for the airbag to deploy. The front and rear head restraints are adjustable as per the passenger preference. The front seat belts can be adjustable as per the convenience. The engine immobiliser is an advanced technology that freezes the engine when it suspects an unauthorized access. Child proof rear door locks that are built into this car is a family friendly factor which additionally is backed with electrical rear window child lock. The day and night rear view mirror is fitted as a standard feature. The front and rear windshield is laminated. Furthermore, it has got halogen headlamps to it as well. While, the Executive Edition has been bestowed with blue vision headlamps.

Mahindra Verito Bottomline

The Mahindra Verito is a sub 4-metre Verito in the true sense. It is identical to the Verito in every aspect except the rear end design and boot capacity. While the hinged boot isn’t much practical, it has helped Mahindra in saving costs of development and production. So does the Verito Vibe make sense? When you factor in the Verito Vibe costs a good Rs. 80,000/- less than the regular Verito, things start making to the mind. If you can live with the rather unconventional rear and boot, the Verito Vibe makes a good case for those who want a practical hatchback which can carry five in reasonable comfort while delivering exceptional fuel efficiency at this price point.
